Knowledge for a sustainable world

Heather McAvoy-Marshall

Significant new investment is being made in research at the Natural Resources Institute as part of the University of Greenwich's new Research and Enterprise Strategy. Research carried out by the Institute on food and agriculture, especially with relevance to the developing world, is a major strength of the University.

NRI is seeking to appoint five new research professors in the following areas:

  • Agriculture and climate change
  • Food and nutrition
  • Food and agriculture policy
  • Sustainable agriculture (also available at Reader level)
  • Environmental economics (climate change) (also available at Reader level)

The newly appointed professors will be joining thriving research programmes where for over a century the institute has been working with its partners at the forefront of international efforts to harness agriculture and renewable natural resources to increase food availability, raise incomes for poor people and help grow the economies of poor countries.

NRI is not just about research but also putting research into use. It has a unique blend of natural scientists, social anthologists and economists, and its ground-breaking work has underpinned many current accepted practices in developing countries.

In addition to these new professorial posts, at least five new funded PhD studentships have been created that will shortly be advertised. These will be in the following areas:

  • Conservation agriculture
  • Adaptation to climate change
  • Understanding cassava brown streak disease resistance
  • Molecular epidemiology of African trypanosomiasis
  • Biocontrol of whitefly
