Dr Hua-Ling Wang obtained her BSc degree in Plant Protection from Qingdao Agricultural University, China in 2008 and MSc degree in Entomology in 2011 from Fujian Agriculture & Forestry University also from China. During her MSc study, she focused on studying the biology of Fopius arisanus (Sonan), a parasitoid of fruit flies. Hua-Ling then spent 3 years studying for a PhD on the characteristics of mitochondrial genome and molecular phylogenetics of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) cryptic species using mitogenomes at the Zhejiang University, Hang Zhou, China. After 2 years post-doctoral fellowship at the Zhejiang University working on the molecular phylogenetics by tracing different molecular markers and bacterial community of B. tabaci cryptic species complex, Hua-Ling joined the Natural Resources Institute of the University of Greenwich in the UK as a postdoctoral researcher in December of 2015. Currently she’s studying the molecular phylogenetics of B. tabaci cryptic species complex combining different molecular markers and the metagenomes.
Hua-Ling has proven experiences of basic biological experiments, molecular phylogenetic construction, population genetics, endosymbiont genome studies and capability of handling large next generation sequence datasets and has the necessary assembly and annotation skills.
Hua-Ling has a wide variety of research interests on molecular phylogeny and bacterial community of the B. tabaci species complex, biological invasions of B. tabaci species and begomoviruses, population genetic studies and metagenomics study. Currently she is most interested in the evolutionary relationship of different cryptic species and the role of specific endosymbionts such as Rickettsia, Wolbachia, Cardinium and Arsenophonus in modifying mating behavior of B. tabaci.
The bacterial community of Bemisia tabaci cryptic species complex and coevolution of Primary Endosymbionts of Bemisia tabaci with their Hosts. September 2015- December 2017.
Different cryptic species differ greatly in symbionts harbor, host range, mating behavior and the ability of transmitting begomoviruses. Endosymbionts have coevolved long time with the B. tabaci which affects their growth, fertility and virus transmission abilities. The aims of this project are to use next-generation sequencing technology to study the symbionts diversity of B. tabaci cryptic species complex and their convergent evolution with the P-endosymbiont Portiera. Hua-Ling leads this Chinese Govt. funded project.
Investigating the molecular systematics of Bemisia tabaci cryptic species complex using next-generation RAD sequencing. January 2016- December 2018.
Hua-Ling leads this Chinese Govt. funded project. Bemisia tabaci is now known as a species complex with at least 36 morphologically indistinguishable species. Systematics of B. tabaci species complex was therefore hitherto analysed largely on mitochondrial molecular markers. However, it is difficult to reflect the evolutionary lineages of the species accurately only using mitochondrial sequence. Additional nuclear markers are required for accurate identification of the many different species within the species complex. The objectives of the current study are:
- Use RAD tag technology to isolate SNPs to determine the phylogenetic relationships of the members of the B. tabaci cryptic species complex
- Generate large SNP, SSR molecular markers for B. tabaci research, and
- Explore key genes from the B. tabaci genome to identify markers to differentiate the various members of the B. tabaci cryptic species.
Characterization of a newly discovered symbiont of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera:Aleyrodidae). August 2016 - December2017.
Symbionts affect host reproduction, development, and resistance. In this project, a novel bacterium, was identified and described from a Chinese indigenous B. tabaci cryptic species. This project aims to study characterization of a newly discovered symbiont including; (i) the genomes study (ii) the distribution in different stages of host applying fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technology (iii) isolation of a colony without this novel endosymbiont. This project will provide the basic knowledge of symbiont-mediated functions in insect hosts. Hua-Ling leads this Chinese Govt. funded project.
African cassava whitefly project: outbreak causes and sustainable solutions project. 2014-2018.
Hua-Ling is a postdoctoral fellow in this mega project http://cassavawhitefly.org/ led by NRI. She is contributing to two key areas of research and development; to study the systematics of B. tabaci cryptic species complex and study particular whitefly populations and gene families of interest, as well as assist in the design and execution of molecular biology experiments (PCR, qPCR, sequencing) to verify particular assemblies and sequence variations identified.
