Dr Bruno Tran worked at NRI until 2001, in the then Food Security Department and he re-joined the Institute in January 2013, in the Food and Market Department.

After completing his PhD at the University of Tours, France, on the synchronisation of the life cycle of the broad bean beetle with that of its host, Dr Tran took up a postdoctoral position at Royal Holloway College, University of London, where he worked for several years on the population biology of the cowpea bruchid beetle. Dr Tran has been an Associate Lecturer for the Open University for 9 years, until 2013.

Dr Tran’s academic career has been interspersed with a variety of positions in the charitable and private sectors: IT trainer and IT training manager, Separated Children database specialist for Save the Children in Liberia, biostatistician in the pharmaceutical industry. The common threads for these positions being the application of a sound scientific approach, training and communication of science.

Dr Tran is an applied ecologist and biostatistician, specialised in field research and consultancy, data analysis and communication, infographics, teaching and training. With sixteen years’ experience in scientific research, teaching, and project management, a special focus in development on postharvest pest and quality control on-farm, in warehouses and during transport. His experience includes participatory research, sustainable and acceptable pest control at farm level, rational use of insecticides and fumigants, storage pest ecology, extension and the communication of science.

Dr Tran has extensive developing country experience in Africa and is fluent in both English and French. A French citizen, Dr Tran has lived and worked in the UK since 1994.

Dr Tran’s research interests include:

  • Postharvest storage and management, storage pest control, and better storage structures and methods. Dr Tran’s postharvest interests start with participatory research and indigenous knowledge and extends to extension (training and communication for farmers) as well as institutional and professional development and training. Dr Tran’s work encompasses small-scale farmers’ storage and national food reserves, grain legumes, maize, rice and millet.
  • Data analysis using appropriate statistical and graphical tools including infographics, presentation of results adapted to the selected audience and communication of science. Dr Tran has designed and produced organisational dashboards, infographics presentations and data investigation visualisations using TIBCO Spotfire in particular.

Zambian Food Reserve Agency

Dr Tran worked as a consultant to the Zambian FRA and the World Food Programme and designed a pilot project to improve quality control of maize purchased by the FRA through the implementation of a mobile, tablet based, logistics system as well as setting up and training a dedicated grading team. The results of the pilot project are being used to plan nationwide improvements to the national reserve agency.

Rice Cargo Consultancy in Liberia

As postharvest expert, Dr Tran inspected a cargo of rice that had been impounded on arrival in Monrovia for suspected damaged quality. After sampling extensively, analysing the ship documentation and using NRI’s knowledge of cargo, shipment and fumigation at sea, it was possible to determine the extent and the cause of damage, and produce a report of responsibility to the insurers.

Cowpea Project

Dr Tran was project leader of a DfID funded agricultural development research project based in Ghana and Uganda 1999-2001. The multi-partners project had a £270,000 budget and investigated sustainable and acceptable methods for the control of cowpea storage pests for small-scale farmers. Through on-station and on-farm research, solarisation of cowpea was selected as the most effective, affordable, sustainable and acceptable method of control.
