Knowledge for a sustainable world

Gillian Summers, Linda Nicolaides

Do you work in the food sector or anywhere along the food chain? Would you like to progress further in your career but lack academic qualifications? Study on the new Food Safety and Quality Management (FSQM) e-learning programme offered by the Natural Resources Institute (NRI) of the University of Greenwich and you can gain a qualification on a part-time basis through on-line study.

The programme combines the best of NRI’s long-established experience of food value chains with the flexibility of a fully comprehensive e-learning programme which allows students to learn from any location in the world, at a pace best suited to their needs, for a duration of three to six years. You can apply to study for a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, or go on to study the full Master’s degree (MSc). Partial fee scholarships are currently available for this programme for outstanding applicants. A scholarship reduces the cost of the programme to £5,400 for the full MSc (£1,800 per year if studied over three years), equating to £900 for 30 credits of study. Apply now and start your studies in January 2017!

“By studying on this e-learning programme, you will consolidate your knowledge of the causal agents of foodborne illness and the control measures that need to be applied to ensure that human food and animal feed are safe and wholesome”

If you already work in the food sector, you will know the implications of foodborne diseases and hazards caused by a variety of agents. If you have ever had food poisoning, this knowledge will be all too clear. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2015 report on the global burden of foodborne diseases highlighted that “...almost 1 in 10 people fall ill every year from eating contaminated food and 420,000 die as a result, children under 5 years of age are at particularly high risk with 125,000 children dying from foodborne diseases every year, and African and South-East Asia Regions have the highest burden of foodborne diseases.”

“By studying on this e-learning programme, you will consolidate your knowledge of the causal agents of foodborne illness and the control measures that need to be applied to ensure that human food and animal feed are safe and wholesome,” says the programme leader, Linda Nicolaides, Microbiologist and expert in Food Safety and Quality Management. She continues, “You will study safety and quality management systems based upon the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) following the ‘farm to fork’ approach, the role of national food control systems, food law and enforcement in the context of national and international standards, and the promotion of international trade. In addition, you will investigate safety and quality issues of a wide range of commodities and manufactured foods.”
