NRI is committed to promoting equality and diversity, and to providing an inclusive and supportive environment in which all individuals have the opportunity to contribute to achieving their full potential. The University welcomes applications from candidates from diverse backgrounds. Many posts are advertised across a range of grades to encourage applications from as broad a spectrum of applicants as possible.

Professor/Associate Professor of Food and Agriculture Policy
The jobholder will expand NRI’s capacity for research on food and agricultural policies at global, regional and local levels. The post requires an in-depth understanding of smallholder agriculture, especially in Africa, and familiarity with evidence-based approaches for identifying agricultural policies that strengthen the sustainability and resilience of (smallholder) agriculture to long- and short-term shocks such as climate change, conflict and increased urbanisation. This role cuts across the four programme areas of NRI’s FaNSI i.e. climate change, sustainable agricultural intensification, food loss and waste and food systems for improved nutrition.

Professor/Associate Professor of Food-based Strategies for Nutrition
The jobholder will lead development of food-based strategies to support nutritionally vulnerable populations including infants and young children, adolescent girls and women of reproductive age.
Increased productivity of agricultural systems has contributed to economic growth and improved livelihoods, but has not effectively addressed the diverse nutritional challenges in low- and medium-income countries. Sustainable improvements in human nutrition require efficient and equitable food systems, which enable access to safe and nutritious food for all.

Professor/Associate Professor of Food Safety Systems
This position is a key role within NRI’s integrated food systems approach to improving nutrition and ensuring food security, with a particular focus on vulnerable populations, including infants and young children, adolescent girls and women of reproductive age. The job-holder will develop a portfolio of high-quality research to address diverse food safety challenges ranging from considerations during trade though to issues of resilience for consumers on the edge of food and nutrition security. The jobholder will build on a proven track record in food safety and food policy as it relates to equitable, healthy and sustainable food systems at global, national and local levels.

Professor/Associate Professor of Climate Change and Food Security
The jobholder will enhance NRI’s capacity to engage in quantitative, policy-relevant research on climate change and food security at global and regional levels. The role relates primarily to the potential impacts of climate change on food security and opportunities for adaptation, involving the four dimensions of food availability, access, utilisation and stability.

Associate Professor/Senior Fellow – Crop Physiology
The jobholder will develop research on crop responses to abiotic and biotic stresses, particularly those affecting food and nutrition security in low- and middle-income countries. Of particular relevance will be research on increasing crop resilience to climate change, soil degradation and increased incidence of pests and diseases. Research will be conducted using an inter-disciplinary approach collaborating with existing areas of expertise at NRI that include chemical ecology, pest behaviour and agroecology.

Associate Professor/Senior Fellow – Climate Vulnerability and State Fragility
This role is intended to enhance NRI’s capacity to research the combined and interacting impacts of climate change/vulnerability and state fragility on food and nutrition security, with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa. State fragility is considered to comprise political instability, including but not limited to the presence of armed conflict, and/or the failure of the state to provide an enabling environment for a functioning economy, especially in rural areas.

Senior Fellow/Fellow in Agri-environmental Modelling
This role will develop research in modelling of crops or agricultural systems in terms of their response to environmental conditions, in particular climate change. Modelling should seek to inform how agricultural systems can adapt to climatic and other environmental change, and to how different agricultural systems affect the environment, ecosystem services, and longer-term sustainability.
Closing date: 25/09/2019.
