There has been a rapid spread of new information and communication technologies, including mobile phone use and internet access, into developing countries. There are important opportunities for these technologies to benefit the rural poor, indirectly and directly, and to provide information for policy makers and development workers. We have helped Indian NGOs working with community organizations to access information on agriculture and natural resources, by linking them to international networks. This work focuses on information access, and on awareness of rights and services among self-help groups. With more conventional media, we have substantial experience in using radio to share and illustrate the impact of research on rural livelihoods. Five series of radio programmes on development projects have been broadcast in collaboration with the BBC World Service. (More information on NRI’s work on communication for development.)
