Programme Details
Qualifications: University of Greenwich Post-graduate certificate, Post-graduate Diploma (PGDip) and Master of Science (MSc).
Location:
NRI, University of Greenwich at Medway, Kent, UK.
Mode of delivery and duration:
Full time 1 year
Part time 2 years.
Some of the component courses are available on a standalone basis; please contact Peter Burt (e-mail: P.J.A.Burt@gre.ac.uk).
Entry requirements: A degree or equivalent professional qualification in an appropriate subject and preferably relevant experience in the natural resources sector. Applicants without formal entry qualifications may be admitted according to their work experience and responsibilities. Entry to MSc Natural Resources (by Research) is subject to proven ability and experience in research.
This programme is designed for interested students and professionals working in the research field who wish to acquire improved expertise and knowledge in natural resources. The MSc in Natural Resources explores the ways in which developmental needs can be met through better understanding and improved management of renewable natural resources, without placing unsustainable demands on the environment. The emphasis is on tropical applications, the Natural Resources Institute's principal area of expertise.
The programme offers postgraduate studies in three specialist areas ('routes'):
Applicants for the Masters Degree or Postgraduate Diploma should indicate their preferred specialist area.
Programme structure and route details
All students, irrespective of their choice of route, must take the Research Methods course (worth 15 credits), and an independent research project (worth 60 credits). The remaining 105 credits required are made up from compulsory and optional courses in their chosen route, although students may fulfil the requirements of the award by taking electives from among other courses available within the programme. All courses are offered subject to timetabling restrictions, staff availability and sufficient student interest. The award of MSc Natural Resources (by Research) is also available for students with the appropriate background in research, fulfilling the requirements for the degree by undertaking an extended research project (120 credits), Research Methods and a limited number of taught courses. There is no direct entry to the "by Research" route: admission is considered after interview on arrival at the University. Applicants must initially apply for one of the taught routes.
