Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced Qualifications in Applied HACCP Principles - Royal Instutute of Public Health (RIPH)
NRI is a recognised training and examination centre for the Royal Institute of Public Health. The courses can be taught either on the Medway campus, or at a food business’s premises.
The HACCP approach to quality assurance moves away from testing of the final product, and instead emphasises process and raw material control. Control is taken out of the laboratory and into the processing environment. HACCP provides a structured and critical approach to the control of identified hazards.

Innovative Courses in Packaging
NRI is an approved centre with the Packaging Industry Awarding Body Company (PIABC) for delivering the following nationally recognised courses:
- The Certificate in Packaging (Level 3 course)
- The Diploma in Packaging (Level 4 course)
These courses support problem-solving and decision-making associated with the technical and aesthetic performance, cost, safety and legality of packaging materials and packaged products.
They have been developed for people, at all levels and in a variety of roles across industry, who wish to develop or extend their knowledge of packaging.
The Certificate and Diploma courses can also provide a very useful complementary qualification for those on HNC/D or degree programmes in packaging-related subject areas e.g. product design, food science & technology, materials science & engineering, and logistics.

Micro-finance for Development
Micro-finance is an influential and fast-growing field in international finance and economics. From its origins in South Asia, it is being adopted in more and more countries across the world – in Europe and the Americas, as well as Africa and East Asia, as a means of creating new businesses and combating poverty in a sustainable way. It works by providing a wide range of financial services to people who have little or nothing in the way of traditional collateral, and thus helping them to build up assets, survive crises, establish small businesses and so on.
Now an exciting new post-graduate course has been developed which deals in detail with this vital aspect of finance.

GM Biosafety Course
Crop plants improved through genetic engineering offer potential benefits to producers and consumers including enhanced agronomic, nutritional and marketing qualities. Although transgenic biotechnology has the potential to benefit agriculture in both the developed and developing world greatly, it also raises important concerns for the farming community and society at large, about the impact of genetically modified organisms on human health and on biodiversity. For developing countries that have established regulatory frameworks and have already granted approval for commercial cultivation of GM crops, the need is for careful monitoring and evaluation of the economic and biological outcomes. For those countries still considering their options, their policy on GM needs to be informed by a careful analysis of the benefits and risks. They require evaluation protocols and an assessment of the capacity required for proper risk analysis, field testing and subsequent monitoring and regulation.
This three week course is run by staff based at the Natural Resources Institute and the Law Department of the University of Greenwich to provide independent advice on regulatory issues concerning the introduction of GM plants from Importation, Containment, and Testing to Release.
The course goes through knowledge building in these areas followed by case studies to put the knowledge into practice, and highlights suitable strategies to ensure safe and sustainable use of GM crops.
