In addition to the PhD and MPhil programmes described above, research opportunities also exist within the Institute’s MSc programmes. We offer an MSc by research award in conjunction with our two taught MSc Programmes, Natural Resources and Food Safety and Quality Management, leading to the award of MSc Natural Resources (by Research) or MSc Food Safety and Quality Management (by Research) respectively.
Students registered on any MSc programme take a series of compulsory and optional courses. Each course is worth a specific number of credits: to obtain an MSc, students must successfully complete 180 credits of course and project work. Whilst taught MSc programmes require students to complete 120 credits of taught courses and an independent research project worth 60 credits, the MSc (by Research) programmes are based upon successful completion of taught courses to a value of 60 credits and a research project worth 120 credits. Consequently, the MSc (by Research) students spend more time on their project work. One of the taught courses must be “Research Methods”: other courses are normally related to the proposed specialist area of research and are agreed with the Programme Leader and research supervisor at the start of the programme of study. Any student wishing to be considered for an MSc (by Research) must first register for the taught MSc. Transfer to MSc (by Research) is based on successful interview with research staff on arrival at NRI. An MSc may be taken in full-time and part-time mode: the minimum length of any MSc programme is 12 months and the maximum is 24 months.
Research work may be undertaken overseas if a suitable local project supervisor is available.
