NRI is an approved centre with the Packaging Industry Awarding Body Company (PIABC) for delivering the following nationally recognised courses:
• The Certificate in Packaging (Level 3 course)
• The Diploma in Packaging Technology (Level 4 course)
These courses support problem-solving and decision-making associated with the technical and aesthetic performance, cost, safety and legality of packaging materials and packaged products.
They have been developed for people, at all levels and in a variety of roles across industry, who wish to develop or extend their knowledge of packaging.
The Certificate and Diploma courses can also provide a very useful complementary qualification for those on HNC/D or degree programmes in packaging-related subject areas e.g. product design, food science & technology, materials science & engineering, and logistics.
The Certificate in Packaging
This course establishes a solid foundation in which to build a successful career in packaging and related industries. It is also appropriate for those who typically interface with some aspect of pack handling or management. On completion students can progress to the Diploma in Packaging Technology and other level 4 qualifications. This course is offered on both the Greenwich campus in London and the Medway campus in Kent.
Course Aim
The course introduces students to the main functions of packaging, provides a fundamental understanding of packaging materials and processes; considers design, marketing, legal and environmental aspects.
Course Outline
Students are required to study the core Mandatory Unit A entitled “Understanding Packaging” and four of the following Elective Units B:
- Legislation in Packaging
- Packaging Design and Marketing
- Understanding the Hazards of Warehousing and Distribution
- Environmental Aspects of Packaging
- Understanding Packaging Line Operations
- Corrugated Board Packaging
- Paper and Board Packaging
- Plastics Packaging
- Flexible Packaging
- Rigid Plastics Packaging
- Printing of Packaging
- Labelling and Coding
Course Assessment: A written examination covering the core unit plus written assignments for each elective unit.
Duration: Minimum 64 guided learning hours

Entry Requirements: Normally expected to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade
A-C, or an equivalent Level 2 qualification, or relevant experience in work plus level 2 skills

The Diploma in Packaging Technology
The Diploma is internationally recognised as the premier degree level qualification for packaging professionals. Successful completion of this course prepares students for progression in the packaging industry. This qualification also provides learners with a means of progression to higher level qualifications e.g. MSc, MBA. This course is only offered on the Medway campus.
Course Aim
To provide learners with a broad knowledge of the principles, materials, processes and other elements of packaging production and use.
Course Outline
The course is divided into 5 units which students must complete for award of the Diploma:
- Unit 1 The Fundamental Principles of Packaging
- Unit 2 Packaging Materials and Components I
- Unit 3 Packaging Materials and Components II
- Unit 4 Packaging Processes
- Unit 5 Managing Packaging Development
Also, students may choose to study individual units to gain a Certificate of Achievement, if they prefer.
Course Assessment: Units 1-4 by examination; Unit 5 by dissertation
Duration: Minimum 120 guided learning hours.
When? Three taught hours every week on:
Wednesday, 6.15-9.30 pm (Medway)
Start Dates: Wednesday 25th April 2007.
Entry requirements: Normally, a minimum of 1 GCE A level and 5 GCSEs at grade A-C, or equivalent. Industrial experience can be used as an alternative to formal qualifications.
