Our natural resources are the interacting components of the environment which are essential for life on this plant, for example natural and man-made ecosystems, climate and weather. The MSc in Natural Resources explores the ways in which the developmental needs of people can be met through a better understanding and improved management of renewable natural resources, without placing unsustainable demands on the environment. Much of the MSc involves looking at tropical applications, NRI's principal area of expertise, although on successful completion of the course students will be able to apply their new skills and knowledge to natural resource investigations environmental problems world-wide.
The structure of the MSc Programme has been recently revised, following consultation with students and external assessors, to provide an updated portfolio of courses reflecting the current needs of those working in the natural resources sector. The Programme is now structured on the basis of three specialist routes, each of which provides more detailed studies on aspects of natural resources (course structure/programme details). Thus, on successful completion of the MSc programme, students graduate with an MSc degree in Natural Resources (named route selection). The subjects originally covered by the Post Harvest Technology route have been transferred to the MSc Food Safety and Quality Management. This means that students wishing to study this aspect of natural resources have a broader suite of courses to choose from, greatly strengthening their skills base.
In addition to the specialist options, all students, irrespective of their choice of route, must take a compulsory course in Research Methods and also an independent research project in a subject appropriate to their choice of route. For this, there may be opportunities for students to work on NRI projects, and students may also bring their own data to work on if they wish. There is also an option to obtain the MSc in Natural Resources (by Research) (see below).
Students may also attend components of the MSc programme with a view to obtaining a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) or Certificate (PGCert), or as individual short courses.
Entry requirements: a degree or equivalent professional qualification in an appropriate subject. Applicants without formal entry qualification may be admitted according to their work experience and responsibilities. Entry to MSc Natural Resources (by Research) is subject to proven research ability and experience. The suitability of a student for entry into this component of the programme is assessed by interview on arrival at NRI: students are initially accepted for one of the named routes.
Course costs: We all know that the cost of education can be high, be we also recognise that this is an important investment. Because of this, we have introduced a series of charges for our courses which reflect not only the cost of delivering the course but students’ abilities to pay. Click here for further information.
Course duration: 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time (intakes in September and January each year).
