B. Government Schemes

     
British Chevening Scholarships Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office these scholarships may be for study in any subject field but in countries which are recipients of UK bilateral aid, the developmental relevance of the course is likely to be of primary importance. Awards are normally made for formal courses of postgraduate study, but are occasionally given for shorter, vocationally oriented courses, lasting between three and six months. Awards may be given to cover all or part of the cost of the period of study. Selection of candidates is carried out by British Embassies and High Commissions in consultation with the local British Council. All applications must therefore be made through the British Diplomatic Mission in the applicant's country of origin.
British Council Fellowship Programmes Nationals of about 70 countries are eligible for full scholarships for study at post graduate level, through the British Council fellowship scheme, which is administered through its offices overseas. The scheme is advertised through the British Council in countries in which it operates. Details are available from British Council Offices overseas.

Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan Open to citizens of Commonwealth countries who are under 35 and permanently resident within these countries who have a degree or equivalent qualification. Scholarships are advertised and applications are made through the Commonwealth Scholarship agency in each country. Contact the local British Council office for the address of the Commonwealth Scholarship agency.
Commonwealth Science Council Travel grants, open to applicants who are nationals of CSC member countries. All applications must be approved by CSC member for the country. Grant of up to £1000 available to cover actual costs of air travel and course registration. Does not cover accommodation and living expenses. See web-site for fuller details.

Colombo Plan Scholarships Available in most fields of study relevant to the progress of developing countries. Open to nationals of countries participating in the Plan (includes Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Burma, Pakistan, Thailand, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Philippines, UK). Request for an award made by recipient country to a donor country; the UK is a major donor among member countries. Further details available from the Colombo Plan administration in the candidates awn country (normally located in Ministries of Economic Affairs, or Development etc.) Candidates must be nominated by their government.
European Community Awards are offered for the training of African, Caribbean and Pacific citizens. Applicants must be nominated by their own Government, which submits proposals to the local office of the European Commission. Further information is available from the local EC office
NATO Science Fellowships Science Fellowships provide opportunities for scientists of NATO's partner countries to pursue their research or continue their training in a NATO country. There are a limited number of fellowships available in some countries for NATO country scientists to study in another NATO country. Three types of fellowship are supported, although not all countries offer all types of fellowship. Applicants from Partner countries should address their enquiries about the appropriate application procedure to the national administrator of the NATO country which they wish to visit. The address of the UK administrator is opposite. Applicants from a NATO country should apply to the National Administrator in the country of which they are nationals, regardless of their present residence.
UNESCO Details of UNESCO Fellowships should be obtained from the National Commission of the candidate's country. All applications MUST be channelled through the National Commission of the candidate's country; without their endorsement no application will be consdered. Six of the 47 awards are available to members of International Federation of University Women affiliate organisations. Aga Khan Foundation The AKF provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries. Scholarships are 50% grant, 50% loan. The Foundation accepts applications from countries where it has branches. Forms are available in January each year from local AKF offices, and when completed should be returned to to the address from which the form was received. Arab-British Chamber Charitable Foundation. Grants are made to Arab students studying at a British University in subjects of practical benefit to the student's home country in the Arab world. Restricted to Arab nationals under 40 who are committed to returning home on completion of study. Applications can be made from their own country or from the UK. Africa Educational Trust

The Trust provides scholarships and Bursaries to help support the general education of Africans, particularly African exiles and refugees. Grants are awarded annually, availability however depends on funding and in any one year may be limited to specific geographic areas or specific subjects.

Canon Collins Trust for Southern Africa

The Trust provides sponsorship for postgraduate studies in the UK in disciplines most urgently needed in South Africa and Namibia, assisting the development of staff skills at the historically black universities and expanding the present tertiary education programme in South Africa itself. Grants to students from Third World countries. Grants are in the form of single payments in time for the start of the academic year and can be for up to £500. Applications must be made through the university or college and provide details of how all other costs, including living expenses , are going to be met. Ford Foundation The International Fellowships programme (IFP) provides support for up to three years of formal graduate level study. For 2000-2001 fellows must be nationals of Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, Chile, Peru, Russia,and Vietnam. Additional countries will be added for 2001-2002. All applications must be submitted to IFP offices in the country or region where the applicant resides. The application deadlines and selection schedule is set by the IFP Fellowship offices. The Rotary Foundation
Ambassadorial Scholarships
The Ambassadorial Scholarships are intended to promote international understanding. Scholars are expected to act as ambassadors of goodwill durinng the term of their scholarship, both in their daily interactions and through formal appearances before Rotary clubs in the host country. Applicants must be citizens of countries in which Rotary clubs are in operation. To apply, applicants should contact their local Rotary Club to see if scholarships are available.
Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Golden Jubilee Fellowship,

The organisation gives grants to women through the Golden Jubilee Fellowships. Grants range from £100 and £500 a year and women permanently resident in countries where there is a Soroptimist Club may apply but need not be Soroptimists. Clubs are in Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bangladesh, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Cameroon, the Gambia, Grenada, India, Jamaica, Malawi, Malta, Mauritius, Nigeria, Pakistan, Republic of Ireland, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Uganda, UK and Zimbabwe. The closing date for applications is 30 April for the academic year beginning the following Autumn. Applicants should write to The Secretary at the address opposite, enclosing a stamped addressed envelope with a UK stamp or an international reply coupon.
S H A Ziauddin Trust

Applications from anyone studying, or wishing to study, on courses in science, agriculture or environmental protection, and willing to use their skills for the benefit of the peoples of the Indian sub-continent (I.e. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka) will be considered at all times of the year. Successful applicants will generally be sent an award of about £500. Please note that this Trust receives far more applications than it is able to support. Applicants should write for an application form to the contact, giving brief details about themselves, their course and their future plans. If appropriate, an application form and explanatory letter will be sent to them in response to which they can give further details.
