Impact of Tsetse Control on Land-use in the Semi-arid Zone of Zimbabwe. Phase 2: Analysis of Land-use Change by Remote Sensing Imagery
NRI Bulletin 70
J PENDER, A P MILLS and L J ROSENBERG

The second part of a study which examines changes in land cover from 1972 to 1993, particularly human-dominated land use in this area of Zimbabwe, using remote sensing imagery. Seven land use cover classes were derived, and the pattern of change between the Communal Lands and between the Communal and State Lands over the period of tsetse control operations is discussed. With 19 colour figures and maps, this book will be valuable to scientists, planners and resource managers interested in the agricultural development of the area.

A Review of Soil and Water Management Research in Semiarid Areas of Southern and Eastern Africa
K MORSE

Research on soil and water management has been carried out in many countries since 1945. Results were reported not only in journals but in various forms of ‘grey’ literature, such as
project reports and conference proceedings, before the use of databases. This book is a collation of all this information and is important to enable researchers to build on the results of previous work, rather than to duplicate it. The work has been carried out by NRI researchers visiting key institutions in six countries in eastern and southern Africa.

Remote Sensing and GIS for Natural Resource Management
C H POWER, L J ROSENBERG and I DOWNEY (eds)

The global demand for environmental status and impact monitoring has resulted in an increasing need for resource managers and practitioners of remote sensing and GIS technology to work closely together. In catering for this need, this publication reports on a one-day technical workshop which brought together both users and practitioners of remote sensing and GIS in natural resource management in order to gain awareness of other activities and to discuss the issues, problems and solutions they have found.

Bio-engineering for Effective Road Maintenance in the Caribbean
J CLARK and J HELLIN

Bio-engineering involves the use of vegetation in engineering design to protect natural terrain and man-made structures from soil erosion problems. Bio-engineering techniques provide practical and cost-effective solutions to many of the environmental concerns associated with infrastructure development. This manual centres around six fundamental techniques, fully illustrated and with crossreferences to appropriate species and specifications, to help
engineers find the solution most appropriate for their situation, and requires no specialist botanical knowledge. Practical advice on the application of these methods to the road sector is based on case studies in the Caribbean.

Introduction to Remote Sensing and the LARST Systems
A PERRYMAN

LARST (Local Application of Remote Sensing Techniques) is an NRI approach to remote sensing which advocates direct local reception of data from environmental satellites so they can be applied in real-time decisions for resource management. This guide to remote sensing and the LARST systems is intended for those resource managers or meteorologists who may have no previous knowledge of
remote sensing, but who want to use the data.

ODA Renewable Natural Resources Profile Series

This series of books gives a comprehensive account of the physical and socio-economic characteristics of each country’s renewable natural resource (RNR) sector and its future development potential. Each profile is set out so as to provide an easily accessible and assimilable source of information on the RNR sector with Key Facts and a Summary at the beginning of each book and detailed analyses in later sections. Topics covered include comprehensive physical, socio-economic and technical data and information which are particularly relevant to that country.

How Farmers Manage Soil Fertility
John Butterworth, Barbara Adolph and B. Suresh Reddy

How Farmers Manage Soil Fertility provides an alternative view of soil fertility management issues to that of conventional textbooks. Based upon experiences of farmers in semi-arid India, it describes the wide range of different practices that farmers follow and how these fit into the livelihoods of other rural people – people involved in wage labour or selling organic fertilisers like vermicompost. Bringing together the voices of farmers and scientists, it describes the advantages and disadvantages of different practices in different places, covering both technical and socio-economic aspects.
