Forest Regeneration after Logging
ODA Forestry Series 3
W HAWTHORNE

A case study of one of the few timber-rich forests in West Africa which remained unlogged until recently, where observations on plants before the first bout of logging are compared with the regeneration observed after it. The study indicates many ways to reduce the impact of logging, whilst highlighting the vigour of natural regeneration in many components of the logged forest. This report will be of interest not only to foresters, conservationists, ecologists and loggers, but to those with an interest in the impact of using mahogany and other tropical timbers on the future of tropical forests.

Gum Naval Stores: Turpentine and Rosin from Pine Resin
Non-wood Forest Products 2 (FAO)
J J W COPPEN and G A HONE

Pine trees are amongst the most widely distributed genera of trees in the northern hemisphere and are not only important for wood, but can be tapped for resin, which then can be distilled to produce gum turpentine and gum rosin. This joint publication with FAO provides information on the technical and economic aspects of pine resin production, including the tapping of trees and the distillation of resin. It also reviews recent trends in world production and markets for gum turpentine and gum rosin. The book is intended for prospective producers of turpentine and rosin and for organizations and individuals appraising projects involving production, especially in developing countries.
