In this Section we focus on the
possible partial replacement of petroleum and diesel by bio-fuels. Brazil
has for many years embarked on a policy of maximising the use of industrial
ethanol as a partial replacement for petrol, making use of its over-production
of sugar. Cambodia is giving serious consideration to the use of such
plants as Jatropha to provide bio-diesel. Sri Lanka has not yet given
serious consideration of this type of product. In a contributing paper
we look at the feasibility of the country directing some of its sugar
production to ethanol and the scale of the potential supply gap. Major
modifications would need to be made to put such a plan into operation.
The paper also provides an analysis of the institutional structures
that are involved in the sector. An analysis of the potential use of Jatropha oil in
Cambodia is provided in the Conference Paper (Colombo, 2005) "Biofuel:
A Sustainable Solution for Cambodia?" [PDF 508Kb]
