Focus issues for the research in South Africa

In South Africa the two key focus issues for the research are:

1. Productive uses of water by poor people, and especially the role of domestic water supplies in small-scale economic activities (garden irrigation, construction, livestock  etc.) and livelihoods

  • research under this theme is being undertaken as part of a comparative study involving four villages in the Sand River Catchment, and four villages in India.

2. The reserve, licensing and human needs

  • implementation of the basic human needs reserve in the Sand River Catchment
  • water resources for domestic water supply
