Biography

Erica Sheward is a Food Safety Specialist at NRI and supports the delivery of MSc programmes in Food Safety and Quality Management. Previously Erica worked as a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Health at University of Central Lancashire in Preston where Erica led the MSc Food Quality and Safety Management and was module leader on a number of programmes within the MSc in Food Safety Management via e learn including International Food Law and Allergen Management.

Erica was previously Technical Director of 'Castle Kitchens Limited,' a food manufacturer involved primarily in the development and manufacture of an extensive range of special dietary requirement meals for the retail, healthcare and aviation sectors.

Erica is a qualified B.R.C Third Party Technical Auditor responsible for verifying standards of product quality, safety and legality amongst food manufacturers supplying major European retailers.

Erica is also a Director of Food Safety and Health Services for 'Global Food Standards', a food safety management training and auditing company, offering consultancy services for small to medium sized food businesses in respect of the development and implementation of food safety management systems.

Erica has written extensively on the subject of food safety in travel and tourism and her first book 'Aviation Food Safety', was published October 2005 by 'Wiley/Blackwell.' Her previous publications include 'Your Passport To Food Safety,' a food safety training manual for cabin crew and 'In-flight Food Safety Passenger Health & You,' a cabin crew food safety training programme.

Erica has acted as a technical advisor to IATA (The International Air Transport Association) ICAO (The International Civil Aviation Authority) and NBAA (The National Business Aviation Association). Currently, Erica was responsible for re-writing the food section of the 'Guide to Hygiene and Sanitation in Aviation' for the World Health Organisation alongside other eminent WHO colleagues in the area of water and food safety.

Erica worked as part of a group of experts in an interdisciplinary working group at 'Park Royal Partnership' with a brief to help establish a 'Food Innovation Centre' at Park Royal for the purpose of providing food safety and technical support to the food businesses located there.

Erica is a Fellow of The Institute of Food Science and Technology and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public health.

Erica is currently seconded from NRI part time to the UK Government 'Better Regulation Delivery Office' acting as a Policy Manager and their in house food safety expert.

Research/Scholarly Interests

Erica's research interests include the application of food safety-based risk management techniques to other high risk sectors and the impact of food law enforcement practices on small food businesses – better regulation.

  • World Health Organisation, 2006 – 2008 (2 years)Geneva/ Montreal/ Toronto, I worked as part of team of International food safety, water safety and aviation policy experts in re-writing the food and water sections of this WHO publication first published in 1960.
